In all my years of building and looking at SBC I have never seen "crushed push rods." Was there wear from the guide plates? If there was, that's the problem. It got thin from the wear and collapsed. Was there any valve problems like interferance? Was the push rods bent?
If you can get a picture up I might be able to tell you more.

The guide plates would never see the end of the pushrod....the sides below the top....possibility. With a mild cam hardened pushrods are usually not necessary.....but you never know the age of the pushrods. My guess would be wore out pushrods or valvetrain geometry problems...maybe wrong application on the rockers asuming they are not bent. If they are bent you could be looking are some clearance problems. Did you loose the heads from improper lubrication?

You have some kind of clearence problem. Make sure the valves didn't hit the pistons. If the heads have been milled there may not be any clearence between piston/valve.
Also check for coil bind. Once you can find where the clearence prob. is then you will know what steps to take to solve it.
