I was wondering if you could have a auto body shop paint your fenders with car paint? If so would it eventually flake off? Thanks, Dave

 

Ive seen some custom painted quads at local drag race tracks used to pull the cars to and from the pit area, most were painted to match the car they were pulling, however these quads rarely see any hard off road riding. I once bought a used 300EX someone had taken to be painted and it looked great until the first time at the car wash and it started to chip away, after alot of sanding and more sanding and a few coats of Plastic Renew the fenders looked almost brand new again.

Dee, I know of no paint or process that would adhere to the plastic on bikes or quads. If you don't already know of them, Maier does make after market plastic fenders,etc.

yup..paint just doesn't work for those plastic fenders. Since they flex so much when you ride the paint just cracks and peels away. My Bud's Warrior had a bitchin' paint job on it, unfortunately after a few rides it got scratched up and cracked up. I've used Plastic Renew and $#&^@* it's hard work. Is it worth it....well..after your done it looks pretty damn good, but, after aggressive riding the contact areas wear your body meets the plastic starts wearing away. Also stickers will strip off the coating, so make sure you follow directions if you decide to go with it. Good luck

Dee.......fenders can be painted quite successfully and for the long term if done properly by a professional. Most shops may tell you you they are capable but it will take some detective work on your part to find the rare individual who truly can perform this procedure for you. It involves many different chemicals than a normal refinish job on a surface such as steel or fiberglass. You will be pleased with the finished product when done well. You can do it. It's a lot of work. I've used a prime/flex coat first and they mix the same material into the base and finish coats of the DuPont Chromacolor Clearcoat System. It lasts just fine. It takes a lot of prep time and the materials are costly. My brother paints cars so I'm having him do it from now on.

There is another process of a dipping dye-sublimation type of bath but I haven't tried it yet. Chris Miller has a nice looking Scrambler you can check out.
