Default Recommend Chest Protector for Trail Riding?

I have a Honda Rancher AT that I mainly use for trail riding in the mountains. Safety is a big concern for me and the family.

I was wondering if the roost style chest protectors are much use for this kind of riding? Or are they mainly for racing type quads? I mean if a 600lb ATV rolls over on you, are any of these protectors going to help?

And if so, are they certain brands you would recommend? I am a fairly good sized fellow (+250lbs and > 6ft). My kids are in the 5.5-6.4ft range. Wife about 6 ft tall and petite.

Thanks in advance.....

Welcome to the forum GregSWilder, I wear a Hallman chest protector from the early 80's. It has been described as the most over built chest protector made. My sons both use THOR chest protectors, not sure of the model but they are the ones with the most coverage available. I think Thor makes a female version of a chest protector too.

Welcome GregSWilder, I see your not to far from me. Where do you ride at?

I wear a Fox chest protector when Im one my dirtbike. I would think about any brand these days would do the job just fine. If you go to Rockymountainmc.com you can get a free catalog that is about 2 inches thick, browse thru there and see what you and your family like.

You can also just Browse their site, go under the tab that says protection.

Where safety is concerned, every little thing you can do will help! I personally think that utilities, because of their greater weight, size, hard racks (top heavy), and handling characteristics, are much more dangerous than a light little sport bike. Yet, my friends who ride utilities, never wear anything but a helmet (state law here). They always say stuff like "I am just riding slow, not like you guys on your sport bikes" but the worst wrecks I have seen, happended when the bike was STANDING COMPLETELY STILL! Somebody tried to make a hill on their 4X4, and they end up sitting there stuck wondering what to do when the bike rolls over on them.

I wear a Fox Flite chest protector, and every other piece of protective gear I can find!

Get a chest protector.
There are mostly for deflecting things like stones thrown from a bike in front of you, and stuff on the trails. Believe me - the first time you take a stone in the chest you'll wish you had one on. Also, it will DEFINITELY help if you happen to take a handlebar in the chest.

Almost all chest protectors provide some shoulder protection and upper arm protection. I don't know how much help you'll get if your atv rolls on top of you - but I'd imagine it would offer some, as it would more evenly distribute the weight across a larger area, and I'd say it can minimize (not necessarily eliminiate) the possibility of injury - esp something like broken/cracked ribs and unjuries to the sternum. A worthwhile investment.

It's most likely going to be up to finding a confortable fit and style/color you like.

I agree with rpxr400 - it might not help much if the quad flips on top of you, but stopping rocks and hitting the handle bars it will make a huge difference. The first time my daughter went riding her dirt bike on a trail ride with me, she hit the handle bars hard and fell over. She never even mentioned anything about hurting her chest, just that she was mad that she wiped out. Without the chest protector she would have been in a lot of pain.

We use Fox protectors, but I'm sure there are plenty of good ones out there.
