Most automotive oils contain anti-friction modifiers which are not healhty for some 4-stroke motorcycle engines, especially if that m/c engine has an automatic clutch.
M/c oils have a higher API rating than automotive oils and do not contain anti-friction modifiers.
I would read your atv's owners manual carefully and use what it says to use, after all, the oil is your engines lifeblood.
Spectro makes a high quality, 4-stroke m/c oil that costs about $3.00 a quart.

From my experience, no matter how expensive the oil is, you still have to change it often. An ATV is HARDER on oil than a vehicle. So I personally wouldn't waste money by spending $3.00 a quart. Hondaline oil is good to use and much cheaper. Also I was told to use Kendal GT1 by Curtis Sparks due to some additives in it. You may have to change the oil a little sooner with Kendal, but is cheap at usually under $1.00 a quart.
Those are my 2 suggestions,

Me and my cousin and his friend all have 250 Honda Recons with automatic clutches and we've been using Castrol GT-X 10W40.
We all three bought our recons about the same time and started using Castrol after our first oil changes.
We've put these machines through some of the worst extreme punishment you can think of in the last year and a half, and they are still working strong(like new),and shifting excellent.
I'm not saying this just to brag or advertise it.The truth is it's been very good oil!
