Anyone here use GPS?
I'm looking at handheld GPS units to use while riding and driving. I am leaning toward the Garmin brand so far, namely the Legend or the Legend C........Any suggestions or tips on this as I am new to all of this. Can more detailed maps be downloaded from online, or do you have to pay for all of them? Color or B&W?

RIDER11X I have a Garmin 76CS. I love it. I don't have topos for it yet. I only have city streets but 75% of the trails I ride on is on the software. Mine is color and that is nice but not manditory.
I know of no place to download free maps.
I also use mine for vacation and it works VERY nice for that. Good luck on your choice.

Well I bought a Garmin Legend pack with all sorts of accessories including software for maps for $199 at Dick's Sporting Goods. I got a 12v power cord, training video, car mount, carrying case, and more! Good deal I think!
Now I got to learn how to use it! LOL!

i have the plain 'ol etrex (yellow) and a ram gps mount on my Brute and use it all the time. it saved me some grief a couple of times. i also have the National Geographic Topo! software that allows me to download my trails onto a topo map or upload trails into the gps. the yellow etrex isn't a mapping unit, so all i can up and download are routes and waypoints, but with a little thought, this is a huge help.
the main thing i do, is leave a waypoint at the trail head or camp or where ever i plan on ending the day. then leave the gps on for the day and it will store the trail in the gps. then if you need to retrace your trail, the gps will show you the way, or if the trail is a loop, you can zoom out and see exactly where your truck is. sometimes we stash the atv and hike beyond the limits of the atv, and i just leave another waypoint and bring the gps.
you'll have fun with it, but all of the features are kinda hard to figure out at first.
monty
