I have a shrimp boat I use in the Gulf Of Mexico and all I add is acid when the batteries are low. Some have lasted for more than three years thats a long time for a 1350cc amp marine battery. I have 4 of them in service at once and usually when adding acid I use a gallon.

Armyman,
It is unusual to add acid to a battery but when the specific gravity drops below specification then you can either add acid or a solution of water and acid that will bring the specific gravity back up to specification (submarines 1.280 was average). It was usually the solution that was added not straight acid.
Also the "cells" in this battery (126 of them) were about 13" square by 54" tall.
We also learned that a continuous trickle discharge would improve battery life but then you definitely would have to charge it after so many amp hours out of the battery. This is hard to due in civilian applications so they went to the continuous charge. Which you pointed out that some manufactures have a higher charging rate then others. That is why you had to refill your concours more often then your yard tractor.
