Ain't that the truth. Didn't actually break mine. More of attacked by a rock and mangled. Luckily, someone camping by us had apparently had a chain break before, and had the stuff I needed. So now I've got the extra m-links, chain and breaker. And like Bing said, the chain acts like it will last forever. My little incident happend on a Friday of a three day weekend. That guy saved my weekend. Would have given him my wife for payment, but that wouldn't have been fair to one of us.

My buddie broke his chain on his Polaris 400 sport. 1 link behind the Master link. So now he carries a link. I myself keep a spare link in my toolbox.

I have always kept the chain maintained and the chain I have now is a non oring. I take it off ever so often and drop it in a 5 gallon container of used synthetic motor oil. I have been riding dirtbikes for about as long as mywifesquad and I have never broken a chain.
I used to soak my chains in oil before started using o-ring chains. It seemed to help a lot. I would use a wire brush on the chain to get the mud/dirt off and then remove the chain to wash the bike.

I would say that as long as you keep a eye on your sprockets for wear. Which is a sign of chain wear, you will be ok most of the time.

I still do this every once in a while.

I've never seen a chain break on a dirtbike, but I have a quad. The only thing that has ever happened to a dirtbike chain, is my friend thru a master link a time or two, but tha was on a MX track. When we trail ride somebody usually carries an extra master link.

Did have the chain on my street bike break years ago. Masterlink decided it was time to go. Just running down the street and next thing I know, revs go up and something hits me on my side. Ever try to fix a chain with just vise grips? Then it was stuck in 2nd gear. Just rode it home in 2nd. Came out about an hour after I got home to see what was up with that, and it shifted fine.

So if us old guys get one of those, we may never have to replace a chain again?
