I HAD NO TITLE FOR MY 87, CAUSE THEY DIDNT GIVE THEM BACK THEN, OR I LOST IT, SO, I WROTE A LETTER, BASICALLY STATING THAT MY DAD HAD GIVIN IT TO ME, PUT ALL THE INFO ON IN AND HAD IT NOTORIZED, NJ WILL ACCEPT THIS, ALSO, ONCE YOU REGISTER IN NJ, IF YOU DO HAVE THE ORIGINAL TITLE, (WHICH I DONT BELIEVER THE MANF. GIVES) IT IS USUALLY A CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN, THE DMV TAKES IT AND GIVES YOU A REGISTRATION, NO TITLE, JUST LIKE A BOAT OR TRAILER, THE REGISTRATION IS IT. GOOD LUCK

We have to register atvs and off road motorcycles in Ca so you need a title. Another reason there may not be a title is if a finance company ,or lien holder, did not send one when the atv was paid off, or it never was paid off. I think DMV may not show it stolen, but the lienholder may also be on the title. I has some problems once with a finance company getting the title from them. So when you call DMV, check if there is a registration, a title and if there is a listed lien holder.

Well the way it works in MO is that you get a title if you pay sales tax and you don't get one if you don't. I didn't pay sales tax on my 1996 Xplorer when I bought it new from the dealer and I saved myself about $700. When I sold it to a guy in Kansas City, MO this last summer, I just wrote out a bill of sale and we both signed it and it had the price and any other agreements on it. When I bought my Sportsman 500 back in Nov. of 1999, I didn't pay sales tax and again I didn't get a title. I had insurence on my old quad when I had it and I now have insurence on my Sportsman without a title. We just wrote both vehicles off as farm vehicles and no sales tax was needed. I would look into getting one if it was hard to sell one without a title, but of the eight to ten people that looked at my old Xplorer, none of them cared if it had one or not.
It sure does seem to change a lot from state to state though. I wish they could all be half-way close to each other.
