ATV TITLES WHY DOES nobody HAVE THEM
#1
This has been a big problem i live in phila pa and you need a title for an atv to register your bike to ride in state parks I have been looking for a honda 250r and have found them in the area but no title how do u show proof of ownership is a state trooper asks to see your registration What i am getting at is how do i get a title to a bike if the seller does not have one. And if i want to run a number and the bike is stolen i have to show the cop where the bike is or i go to jail. Did anyone ever have this problem before all bikes come with titles or bill or origion when they are sold by a dealer does everyone lose these. If so how do u get another one in your name
Thankx
Alex
Does an aftermarket frame like lonestar, or lagers come with a title when u buy them
I also had another problem i found a bike with a phila pa title but no vin number on the bike how to u justify this problem
Thankx

I know that to ride in PA I too had to have a title. Well the problem is that I don't have one for my 250R and then they wanted the serioal number. MY 250R is a mut sorta and the serial numbers don't match. I told them it was a salvage ATV and that I used different parts and crap like that and tey said OK.

The first thing I'd do is call DMV and check if the quad is stolen. Give them the Vin number. If the owner of the quad can't get the title, you better be getting a really good price on the quad. I'd rather pay $1k more for a quad with a title. Here in NJ, most used quads for sale have titles. Good luck.

That drove me crazy as well(I'm also from the Philly area) - I finally gave up and bought my used quad from a dealer - I know I got raped - but was sick of being told 'no I don't have the title - why do you need one?'.
I went to see a quad in CT - he said he had the title - when I got there - no title - I was furious(I was up there for work anyway).

And as for paying more to have a title - I didn't have a title for my '89 Banshee in good shape - sold it for $1,000 - great deal for him - but I was that dodo saying 'no I don't have a title - why do you need one?'

On a serious note, would someone please explain why you need the title. Is it mandatory for you to register an ATV in you respetive states. What type of advantages does the the registration program provide back to the owner, if any. I live in Kentucky and we do not have any type of state registration, so a title is not need. You do not need any type of registration to ride on private or public land. So if you plan on buying a used bike in Kentucky, don't expect a title to come with it. I know you get them when you purchase a new bike but most people don't even think about asking for it when they buy a used bike. As far as the aftermarket companies, no titles are issued wth these bikes.

Thankx for all the posts i see i am not the only one with this problem. I have an 87 Lt 500 Quadzilla and i have a title trasfered in my name i do some ridin in potter county and you need a valid registration sticker to ride in state parks. When you apply for a registration you get a serial number and a purple sticker that you put on the left back fender when u get these stickers you also get an owners card so u dont have to carry the title or bill of origion. After the bike is registered you can apply for ATV insurance which i have and it covers the bike for theft collision etc. Just like snowmobile insurance.
The registration is good for 3 years.

I ran into the same thing when I bought my 250R in January, the guy didn't have a title. I called the DMV with the VIN and they said it was clear (not stolen), so I bought it thinking I could locate the original owner. No such luck, I couldn't find him, and was told by the DMV I had to get him to sign a form in order to transfer the title. In New Mexico you have to register your ATV to ride on any State/Federal land like USFS or BLM, and they issue you a license plate (like on a bike) and a tag good for 3 years.
When I sold it, the guy who bought it found someone that will secure a title for about $150, not real sure how but he's got one for it now. I think he was like a bond agent or something like that, usually does that for cars that people have lost the original or died or something.

In Canada, we have to register all motorized vehicles... Quads, Dirt Bikes, etc. It only lasts for one year, at $25.00/yr.
There is a good thing to all of this. In Ontario and Quebec, Atving and Snowmobiles are huge. It is very organized through clubs and organizations, and the Provincial Governments. All money that is collected through registration fees, is put right back into the up keep and grooming of the trail systems. There are thousands of miles of trails, with resting areas, and some have places to stop and have a coffee or whatever.

hey found out some more info you can obtain a bill of origion when you buy an aftermarket chasis but they run 2200 for a lonestar and 2400 for lagers steep price to pay but if i am going to put alot of money into this bike i want it in my name.
There is also a paper you can get from a local atv dealer to apply for a vin number and title for an atv frame. I had this problem with my 86 250r the chain snapped and cracked the vin plate off that hangs above the the left back side swing arm.
