swing-arm bolt stuck???
#1
I am needing some ideas on how to get out a froze swing-arm bolt. It is in an '85 ATC. Looks like it definitely has not been out before. This is the hardest one I have seen so far. The nut came off just fine, but I can't get the bolt to turn a bit. Any ideas or little tricks up your sleeve?
thanks

Welcome to insanity!
Well, I had the same thing happen to my 350X. After pounding, heating, and cussing, I ended up taking it to a machine/fab shop where they had a lot of cool tools. Especially a hydraulic press. I dropped it off so I don't know what they went through to get it apart. He did say they used they hydraulic press though. Charged me about $40 to do it.

I had the same problem with my Banshee. The bearings were shot so I went to replace them, couldn't get that darn bolt out for nothing. Impact wrench wouldn't do it so I left the nut on flush with the end of the bolt and beat the hell out of it with my framing hammer. Oh yeah, I got that bad boy loose.Once I got it broke loose, I took the nut off and I still had to hammer it all the way through to the other side with a very large phillips screwdriver. After I put new bearings in it, I greased the bolt to try to prevent that from happening agian. GOOD LUCK.

same thing 87 250r
I laid the atv on it's side with the head on the bolt facing down and the threads up. I took a heavy piece of round tubing that was just big enough to fit the head of the bolt in the inside. I welded it to a plate. The idea was so that it gave some support around the frame while I whaled on the other side with a punch. I made a home made punch that fit into the hollow part of the bolt and the outer was slightly smaller than the bolt outside diameter. That was a 4-wheeler a 3-wheeler maybe a little harder to balance. GOOOOD LUCK !

Well,
You are in to it now. Might as well plan on getting a new swing arm bolt. You might try getting one of those bulk gallon WD-40, and soaking it for a long time. I think you will still have to pound the heck out of it. It won't be salvageable.
When I redid my 350X, I put some grease zerk fittings on the swing arm. You gotta be careful when you grease it tho, because the pressure will force the seals out. (happened to me the first time.)

The bushings become so seized to the bolt making it very hard to remove without damage i paid around $50 for a new bolt. I took a band saw out and cut the bolt between the swingarm just like someone stated above. That may be your best bet

Well cw your best bet is with a impact gun.I own a 85 atc 250r and had the same problem. I am a heavy equipment mech. and happen to own a 1 in. impact wrench. Thats what i ended up useing.I soaked it with oil for a week and still had no luck. So i broke out the big gun and thought it would snap the head off or break it loose. Thank god it broke loose. If you don't have a impact gun your local tire shop should, give it a try.Even if it breaks you have to pound it out anyway. GOOD LUCK
