Default 1982 CR480

Hey,
I am looking at buying a CR480 dirtbike. Does anyone know anything about them? I know it has a 4speed tranny and kicker is on the left side; but does anyone know like how reliable they are; power, speed ,etc?

How much would you say its worth? it had the top end done about a yr ago i think and it needs a new muffler.

I owned one of these back in '82. I thought it was the baddest thing ever when I owned it and the I got my '85 500. it is a nice bike and makes gobs of power and its makes alots of torque too. And its very controllable too. The only time I didnt like it was at the end of a 100 mile enduro and the clutch would heat up and start binding a little. I was riding the expert class at the time and pushed it pretty hard. I actually liked the left kicker because you could get off the bike and get more leverage. As for what its worth, Id say between $500.00 and $800.00 or so.

It is more of a technique than strength. And a fresh bore will be tougher than a worn one. I actually liked my 480 and 500 with a little wear on them. Easier to start and its not like I noticed the power drop from the worn rings. My oldest son started riding the 500 when he was 13 and was about your height and 160 lbs. He could start it when it was warm, but never when it was cold.

They dont do to bad on gas because you cant be on the gas all the time. I got about 30 mpg riding fast on the trail. If your going to ride it in sand youll swallow fuel at a alarming rate.

I would be riding on gravel, grass, dirt and mud now and then.
Do they over heat in hot weather? Are the 4 spd trannys any good?

I was a expert level enduro racer before I noticed any over heationg problems and that was only in the clutch action and I abuse the clutch a lot at the end of a race too. There was never a noticable loss of power. The 4 speed is more than enough for all the power. I ride my CR500 in 3rd gear most of the time. 2nd for tight trails.

All CR480's got a little something from Honda. A sticky throttle! I don't know why but they were known for it.
