What a terrible thing. The way it sounds though it was kinda a freak accident. Maybe too much speed, maybe it was dark...i don't know. Sine they were on they're private dirt road my guess is this was on a farm. And anyone who has grown up on the farm knows that lots of the time when your just donig chores or hauling feed with you quad you don't always where a helmet. In fact i know i didn't. Also you don't always only have 1 ridder. Often times you might have 2 or 3 (the back rack makes a big seat) because you not travelling that far or you not bag driving yada yada. This sounds like one of those situations ..... Dad and son were out doing chores in the back 40, hopped on the 4-wheeler to go for dinner, hit a rut and flipped the quad into a swamp. Those from the country would know what i'm talking about those from the city... well never mind. Thats my 2 cents.

I agree with LEP. While I'm sorry the accident happened, we don't know how safely the father was driving for the conditions, or double, or unsafe, etc. ATVs are always potentially dangerous. Our club members have had five accidents this summer at times of normal riding--none were in dangerous spots or with anyone showing off.

My wife rolled her ATV last spring and it pinned her by the wrist (which was broken and subsequently needed a plate put in to repair it). I rolled it off her as soon as I got back to where she was. But I don't blame the manufacturer. She just made a beginner's mistake.

It is our choice to put ourselves in a position of potential harm. If you don't like it, don't ride it. It's that simple.

It's like when motorcyclists don't wear helmets. Well, okay, but if you get dinged, don't expect free care at the hospital that I have to absorb through higher payments when I go there. Or if you choose to smoke and get lung cancer, you don't have a right to sue the tobacco company for your lack of personal responsibility and poor judgment.

Again, I wish these things wouldn't happen, too.

Based off the original post, it appears this guy was riding double with his son, on a road. We can't blame any manufacturer because of the weight of the machines. Sad but true, the guy was in wrong by disregarding the manufacturers recommended usage.

Don't get me wrong, I am as sorry as anyone that the ATV family has lost another rider (we also lost a couple recently here in MN). But we do need to be responsible and accountable for our actions. As sad as it is, these incidents only fuel the anti's fire.
very good point!! a friend of mine was killed on a 400ex not too long ago, the boy she was ridin with was 15 and the size of a fourth grader!!! on a 400ex. riding at night with no lights and rear ended another boy on a ute, she flew over both quads and landed face first on the asphault, crushed her face and she died like 5 or 10 minutes later. unresponsible riders are making mistakes that can be avoided.

People DO get in trouble when they use ATV's not in a way designed. Seems a large share of accidents are the result of running 2-up on 1-up quads, and also running on pavement too. I saw a story on a football message board in Florida a month ago. Guy and girl on a street, no helmet, 2-up, loose control and hit a curb and she dies. Then there are all the anti-ATV messages right after the story. That type of riding & risk taking hurts all of us in the end
