Default working a winch in the mud or water

How do you use your winch will stuck in the mud or stuck in water that has some nasty mud under it? and the mud or water level is above you winch? Do you keep your line up above where you can reach it from were you sit?

So, Today I took my ATV out for the first time at Croom and it was a nice nasty rainy day and made some nice mud, so I get stuck pretty deep (winch was in the mud) and I go to use my winch and it's not working and is still not working as we speak. When I was at the dealership they toldme they were putting a warn and when they delivered it was a mile marker winch, I don't know much about winches so didn't think it was a big deal. now I'm pretty PO'ed, I called the dealership and the sales manager who was working with me was not there and they said they would definately try and help me out after they can talk to the SM tomorrow...we'll see. Are winches supposed to be able to work in the mud or water (submerged)? if not whats the point in having one? Or are mile marker just shotty? Do you think a warn would have done that? Thanks for all your input.

You need a sealed winch. The Warn 3.0 and above are sealed, they will always work underwater. The other Warns will too for the most part. Most people when they know they are going to be going through that kind of stuff attach the hook of their winch to the top of the front rack, then you can get to it easier and it isn't all muddy. I never had a problem with either of my 2.5 Warns or even the 1.5 my old man has.

Gorilla is also making a fine winch these days, they have some available that are sealed as well. Woth checking it out at 1/2 the price of the Warn.

So the dealership called and said they were gonna give me the warn anything I should know about maintaining (oils, lubricants) it or things I shouldn't go thru (like deep mud , can they be submerged in water) or anything like that, had that crappy mile marker and riding through the rain and mud just one day and it failed before it was used.

Also I wanted to know if you get mud and crap under the seat where all the electrical stuff is how do you clean it? can I hose it down? what happens if a lot of water gets under there? like when people go thru rivers and lakes and there atv are under water beside a snorkel do they do anything else? Thanks.
