Default Nerf bars

Seems like alot of riders put nerfs on their bikes. My question is what are their purpose, and are they mainly for racing? Seems like they would be a pain in the *** on trails and extremely uneven terrain.

Thanks.

#1 Keep your foot out from under the rear wheel! If you foot ever slips off the peg (it will happen!), you will get sucked under the quad, runover by your own tire, and dragged along. I have seen this lots of times, and there has occasionally been lots of blood and lots of stitches!!!

#2 If two quads are riding close together, it keeps the wheels of one from getting in between the wheels of the other. Imagine your buddies rear wheel in front of your rear wheel, and you run it over.......

No problem on any type of terrain! Nerfs are like insurance, if you aren't smart enought to buy them, you deserve the consequences!!!

I know I'm probably the minority on this, but in very tight woods riding, like hopping logs, riding rutted terrain and hills, through brush, etc., I feel they get in the way.

That said, not many people use sport quads for this type of riding, so I recommend getting a set. They are definately a nice insurance policy in case your foot does slip off the peg. Actually, we had to take a friend the the hospital last Summer for this reason, he now has nerfs.

First time I rode with mine on, I went into a corner that had a lot of grass around it. The nerf bar hit a pretty big rock, and bounced the quad around it. With out the nerf, the back tire would have caught it dead on, and I would have gone from 20mph to 0 in an instant. Pretty sure that would have tossed me off the quad and who knows what could have happened.

And besides, they do look cool.

Thanks for the input guys! Another question, Can you stand on them while riding or rest a foot on them? Seems like there are numerous styles and prices out there. Guess they will be added to "the list". Thanks!

Yes, any decent set can be stood on. I routinely stand on mine while loading/unloading the quad in the truck bed.

I like the DG RacePegs, where you remove the stock footpegs, and there are footpegs that are part of the nerf itself....so yeah these are nice and strong and you can stand on them.

My other ones where you keep the stock pegs aren't as sturdy, and while you can stand on them I wouldn't do it on rought terrain or for a long time.
