I'd third that... Judgment of the operator plays a big role.
That being said, I've ridden a sport quad up a steep mtn trail where it seemed like you had to balance between the front end coming up and the rear loosing traction, while trying to pick that speed that wouldn't buck you off over the rough roots and stuff and still have enough momentium to make it over the loose and soft parts to make it up the hill...
On one of my 4x4's I could have my weight as far forward as I want and not worry about loosing traction, and I could also crawl up the climb w/o worry about keeping enough momentium...
I guess what I'm saying is that both are safe if the operator has a good brain and some experience, but there are some steep rough loose technical 4x4 type trails that are easier to handle with a 4x4...
