Is $250k a year rich?

From the new york times, 9-30-99...
<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.</end quote></div>
<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980's.</end quote></div>
It takes a long time for the effect of policy decisions to impact the economy...
I'm usually a free market, small government kind of guy... but I would support expanded medical coverage- say for everyone who works full time, and those over 65.
American workers are very productive, but when our auto industry and other companies have to pay for employee medical coverage, it isn't too shocking that it is tough to compete with companies from other countries who don't have that expense...

There are some that can't work because they're elderly, or for some other perfectly good reason. My quip wasn't really directed at them, besides elderly folks have invested into the system for quite some time. My problem is with people who eat themselves into oblivion while watching Oprah while welfare runs out and then try to get SSI and free health coverage. It was my experience as a uniformed police officer in an inner city where about a little over half of the population was on public assistance that most on medicare were perfectly able of going out and getting a job. Yeah they might have had to work 2 jobs to try and start getting ahead, but hey nobody said life was fair. I worked my butt off in college so that I'd get ahead later in life and sacrificed some of the best years of my life working hard on an education that would serve me well for the rest of my life. Many of the people that I have such a problem supporting were out drinking and partying and otherwise enjoying their youth.

If you make more than a doctor and lawyer combined you may not <u>think</u> you're rich, but you're sure as h@ll not poor!!!</end quote></div>
I acknowledge that I'm by no means poor, in fact I said above that I'm very secure financially and live pretty comfortably. I personally don't make more than a doctor or aircraft pilot though. In 3 years, when both my wife and I are at our top pay grade (with only step levels to increase our pay) I'll be at about 110,000 and my wife about 80,000 per year, certainly not bad money, but I still don't think it's rich either. Also, I think that some of those career builder numbers are very conservative. I'd have to believe that CEO's are averaging more than that now, as their salary growth has been about 40 times that of the average worker bee.

Go after the rich for their money and watch the hammer fall. You think they'll take the loss? Sell vacation homes or tear up their wives credit cards. Hell no, they'll lay off employees, close plants, raise prices and delay or cancel growth to make up the difference. It's so easy to biotch and point fingers at them. It'll make a good conversation piece in the unemployment lines.
It's amazing at how many of you don't see or get the big picture. Yea we all want to screw the rich. I've always said fock the establishment. But watch who has the last laugh. It sure as hell wont be the the lower or middle class. Not to worry tho, there will be more welfare and food stamps to go around, just what this country needs?¿

The government always has, and will always have a haven for the rich. It's the IRS.
I owed them 600 bucks once. Of course, they let me pay it out, with interest. But I had to pay the full amount.
Had I owed 600,000 to them, I could have gotten an attorney to cut that by at least 50% if not 75%.
So how do they make up that 450,000 difference? 600 bucks plus interest at a time.
Oh, unless you're Willie Nelson. But I think that should happen to all singers and actors who think they should tell people how to vote.
Are the Baldwins gonna leave the country anytime soon?
