How stable is your job?
#21
Things are pretty rough in my neck of the woods.
The aluminum plant here used to be the stable job with the living wage, but that's been closed for a couple years and is being demolished as we speak.
A company that makes components for windows came to town a couple years ago, but they are laying people off as new construction had dropped off.
On the plus side, I think quite a few locals have gone into windmill turbine work, and there are tons of other people in town for those projects- a boost for local motels I'm sure.
There's also a big Google facility in town, but no one really knows how many employees they have...
We also might get a Super-Wallmart. If both adults in a family were to work there, though, I think they might barely stay afloat in a substidized small apartment.
The City's funding seems to be stable as the city limits have expanded and there has been new construction, but I think the county is in a tight spot.

It stands to reason that some people will prosper during this economic downturn and others will not. Unfortunately, most will not.
Fortunately, I have enough seniority and rank that I will not lose my job unless they close the fire department, which could happen, but is highly unlikely. We will be affected, however, to what extent we really don't know yet. I just hope we don't have to lay anyone off. I don't mind the increased workload or even less pay as long as everyone can keep their jobs.
Unfortunately, my side work is in real estate and I am sitting on a small subdivision with 45 lots still empty. So I keep paying the bank. It's all good and the risk we take to make that million. It could've been worse and I could have built a few model homes that I would be sitting on right now, that would hurt. Luckily I got some good insight early in the year that made me wait. I sure didn't expect this, though. I suspect 2009 will still be bad with 2010 being the year of the comeback. I hope it does, if not, I will be sweating it by then!
Hey JeffinTD, you're from the Dalles, Oregon? I have a friend who transferred up there last year from here in Klamath Falls. He is a Chief officer for the fire department there, Dan Hammel. Do you by chance know him? His family has been living up there for years.

I work at the U.S mint, we currently put on 2 extra shifts, working around the clock to run the printers to keep up with money supplies to banks and corporations.
Another 5 new faster printing presses are being set up and will need 3 shifts each also, so send in a application. Our Union is worried if the ink and paper suppliers can keep pace with us though.

You know, any of those bills that aren't up to your standards might be up to mine.

I was just kidding, I live in Canada. With all the bailouts I bet the Mints are really busy busy. LOL Ink and paper are the best commodities to invest in right now.
