Default Chest guard for trail riding?

I just got back from my local dealer with my friend and the guy told us that haveing a chest protector would be key for trail riding, so we each got one. Do you think its a good idea to have one for riding on trails?
Thanks

Would not ride without mine. Had a friend that was killed not wearing his, crushed his chest on the handlebars with his ribs/chest impaling his heart!

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that man. My dad thought it was a stupid purchase that I wasted my money on, now knowing that it could save your life I think its totaly worth it.

Friend of ours went over the bars. Broke a rib and it puncutred her lung! She lay there bleeding out of her mouth until she died, with her family standing there helplessly watching.

Wear all the protection you can, or just be stupid and natural selection will happily eliminate you from the gene pools!

The one time you need it is the one time you're not wearing it. Wear every single bit of protection you can. I made that mistake when I hit a tree so hard I broke the welds on the right front A-arm. Luckily was just bruised really bad. Felt like I broke every rib. No idea how I didn't break any bones, just lucky I guess.

I DO NOT ride without one either ........ the fact that your Father said a piece of safety equipment was a stupid waste of money bothers me on some level.....

Last year I landed a small double, and in the wetness my hand slipped off the bars and my chest hit the front brake reservoir pretty hard..... It was an innocent little mishap that could have been much worse had I not had my chest protector on. I've heard many people say they are stupid or not needed, but I've been riding too long and I've seen too much to take anything for granted ......
