Pistol carrying while riding

I'm guessing you are allowed to open carry in Montana? As far as dirt getting into the barrel I would assume that it could possibly do some sort of damage if you were to have to fire the pistol if there were dirt in there. Obviously all would be good if it got in there and you got home and cleaned it well after the ride and didn't need to fire it.
Unfortunately in Massachusetts we are not allowed to open carry so I use a IWB holster so dirt wouldn't really be too much of a problem.

A balloon as Moose said would be great if you get the right size. Then the dust only gets in between the frame and slide. There are things at the drugstore called finger cots that look like small condoms. They work great on a lot of rifles and shotguns and some pistols but might not stretch enough to work on yours.

I am a security guard and I carry a pistol on my job, an HK P30L. Where I work is all dirt and in Alabama (hot and it gets really dusty)I ride a Polaris Ranger on my rounds that I don't walk. Granted I have a holster that covers the whole gun now, but my old 9 mm's holster was open at the tip like the one you talk about. I didn't ever notice build up in the barrel. I made sure not to OVER oil it though. Over oiling can attract dirt. A little goes a long way. If you ride behind someone all day and eat a lot of dust, it would be a good idea to take it apart and clean it. Especially your magazines, the mags are the first thing to fail on an auto. Glocks are very dependable when dirty, I just wouldn't neglect it based on this. If the chamber is fouled with gun powder, they will jam while chambering. If at all possible, get a full holster, but I don't think you'll have any problems with just dust. Maybe if you cover yourself in mud from hitting a mud hole, just check the barrel then(Unloaded of course).
