Default Another Two-Wheel Convert !!!

A friend who has always been a die hard dirt biker, bought a quad FOR HIS WIFE (a piped/K&N 400EX). We did a 4-day trip this weekend, and his XR400R sat idle the whole time. He was like a kid with a new toy!! He couldn't believe how much fun it was, and that he had been missing this all these years.

So. Calif has an ENORMOUS number of dirt bikes. I recall reading that Calif. is the only state where dirt bikes outsell ATV's. In some ways it doesn't make sense, because we have so much desert sand where the 2-wheelers just wallow around. I think dirt bikes (I grew up riding dirt bikes myself) are part of the culture, and these folks just haven't thought much about ATV's.

I would have to say that each has its own place. I own both an 86 CR250 (only mod - white bros. suspension) and an 85 ATC250R , and I have to say that each has its own place. When playing in the sand, (Glamis, Dumont, Sand Mountain, even soggy dry lake dunes) or the forest, the 250R is THE ride of choice. period. When Running through the desert areas like johnson valley, bell mountain, el mirage, or hitting the local MX track, my CR250 is much easier and faster to ride. I only need a 3 inch path versus 42". And my 250R really doesn't like more than 10 feet of air... On the CR, the sky is the limit. Oh yeah, on a flat out race, my 250R will smoke the CR.. Something about a head polishing and port job sure makes a difference.

At Ocotillo Wells, on the Shell Reef Expressway just east of Devils Slide, there is a very sandy area. The deep sand comes on rather gradually and imperceptibly. On a big weekend, they might as well just park the ambulance right there, because lots of dirt bikes will go down at high speed, and there are going to be some broken collar bones!!! On our quads, we just float on by while the paramedics load them up.
