Trailer Axles,,,,whos a pro???
I have a single 3500lb axle with brakes (electric) (Redneck brand), and 6000lb springs. (the spindles are also bent,,,,,long story)
I would like to get a 5200lb axle.
1. will I be able to salvage my brakes off my 3500 axle, or will I have to buy new?
2. How much does a 5200 lb axle cost,,,,with and without brakes?
3. anyone know of a seller with good prices?
Thanks
Mark

I don't think your 3500lb brakes will fit on the new axle. if my memory serves me, your axle is a 5 lug wheel, with a 14" or 15" tire? and you over loaded the crap out it? now that its bent you are doing the over kill shuffle? the best thing for you to do would be to repair it with the correct springs and axle, and then sell it and upgrade to a heavy axled trailer. the thing I think you are missing is that no matter how much axle you put under the trailer, the trailer is framed as a 3500lb capcity . if it survived you would have quite a trailer, and the motor carrier enforcment people would give you ticket if its registerd as a 3500lb.

Currently I only put about 1500 lbs of stuff in it. So the 3500 I have is actually still OK. I overloaded on a move one time and the axle slammed the frame a couple times. OOPs. This was probrably 20,000 miles ago. I am in no hurry by any means. (spindles are bent lightly)
I changed the springs just to ensure these two wouldnt touch again,(I was leaving on a long trip). The 6000lb springs have served me well, and I figure I cant go wrong with a beefier axle. I totally agree about the frame being 3500 also. My intent is not to add more weight, just piece of mind.
Is there a big difference in bearing size between these two size axles?
Thanks for the post.

Bing:
You might try going to http://www.redneck-trailer.com/ to check where the nearest store is, I think it is in Idaho, however a phone call will get the information you need. Also there should be a trailer parts supply near you that will have information as to interchangeable parts.

PullerGuy,
I got in touch with redneck,,,,$101.18 for a new 3500 Dexter axle.
Not too bad. Looks like the toybox is gettin a new axle.
BTW,,,the Redneck website works good. I got a response to my question in about 2 hours.
I spoke with Mark, primarily. Two reps actually called me.
