Two way radios for riding
#2
Hi Warrior8me,
I have heard and read good things about the Collett Electronics devices. We are considering getting some for our group. The nice thing about these is, you can get your own group channel assigned. Here is where to go:

We recently purchased the Chatterbox FRS X2 radios from www.motoemporium.com for trail riding. They took a while to install, but were really nice to have as I don't have to constantly look back to see if my wife is doing ok. They use voice activation or pushbuttons for talking, and have a two mile range. We ordered the units with boom noise canceling microphones and a patch cable so we can listen to music while riding. We've only managed to use them once so far, but it made our 60 mile trip a lot nicer than when we used to use ESP and hand signals. I ended up calling the dealer with some questions, and they actually gave me a better price than what is listed on their website.

dboland,
Did you pick up the mini am/fm radio(?); as I just ordered it yesterday for my recently purchased GMRS X-1. Wondered about the antenna range and also had the them send me a pair of the newer 'sound deafening' microphone/headset that was supposed to be on all newer models(glad I checked their website).
Very dissappointed in the waterproof quality of the enclosure/dials as compared with the Colletts I own and the mounting bracket is about useless without heavy modification. I'm sure I'll like how they operate; but will certainly be making sure they are somewhat covered in 'downpour' rains(heck, you can see right 'through' the main battery compartment with the lid closed and there is no 'gasketing' whatsoever!)
Problem is, I haven't found a legitimate competitor to these guys who produce a GMRS compatible unit.

I picked up some patch cables for hooking up to any CD, MP3, Radio. Haven't used that feature yet though. You're right about waterproofing, these units don't have the best, but other people I've spoken with have slipped a shower cap over it during extremely wet riding.
You're also right about the mounting. Very difficult to adapt to my Zeus Modular Helmets, but I think with a little modification, I can get them to attach better. Again, we've only used these on one ride, so I can't tell you how good their distance is, but the four hours or so we used them sure made life nicer.
