Info on a Come a long (Winch)
#1
I am really interested in a come a long,
Pro: can use it on front or rear lightweight
Con: cable is short
Can someone recommend a good come a long. The ones I have found only have 10-12 feet of wire. Which is better steel cable or yellow strap type?
The type of riding I do is trail with mudholes. I am not a mudder!

Come-a-long, They are all but the same, I would get one with wire rope because it is easier to replace, make sure that you it also has a ******-block it will make you life easier. you will also need a tree protector (nylon straping or chiain) and a longer peice of cable. 12' will never be long enough.
Hope this helps

I agree with BidCatDriver, go with a wire rope come a long. I don't know what kind of hardware stores you have around you, but we've got a few here at the Grange's, and Cenex, True Value, etc, with come a longs rated between 2-6 ton, and prices ranging between $30-$60. Come a longs are great, but their only drawback is the length of the cable. If you unhook it from itself, and do not use the pulley block that comes on it, you will double your line pull, but will also cut your power in half. The trick with come a longs is to carry 50-100' of extra cable, or rope, then hook the come a long to this. 12 or 15' of pull from the come a long is almost always enough to get you out of a sticky situation, but you don't have enough line to reach any trees, or such. Most of the time you are stuck, you only need a pull for a couple feet to get you out, so I think if you get a good come a long-wire rope type- and some extra line cable, you'll do just fine.
Hope this helps.
