I would strongly suggest a K&N air filter. They were the industry's leader in performance filters. Not to mention their reliability and lifetime warranty.

Regarding drilling holes in the air box, you might has well take the cover off and save the box. One thing to keep in mind, you'll need to clean the element much more often AND don't ride in water!

Definitely get rid of the factory air filter setup, and buy a Pro Flow conversion kit. The kit comes with a billet mounting adapter that mounts in the slot where the front of the air filter normally drops in, and also has an o-ring to completely seal out dust between the adapter and the front of the airbox. You'll have to drill two holes from the outside in to secure the adapter in place, making sure not to pinch the o-ring. The kit I ordered came with a foam filter (which is what I used), but I "think" you can just get the adapter itself and use a K&N instead. It's up to you, but either is better than the factory set-up.

As far as modding the lid, you can add 6-12 holes by using the vent plugs, but for about $35 you can also get a Poweroll lid that has two open slots along the right side--supposedly it flows as well as no lid at all, but also helps direct any junk/water away from the filter. I had the lid as well, and although it needed a little trimming to fit right, I would recommend it. Just keep in mind that you'll have to re-jet if you replace the filter with one that breathes better, and/or if you mod the lid. With both, and a WB E-Series pipe, I ran a 155 on the main, but in reality it all depends on what you've done to the machine and where you live.
