Oil Leak under Banshee?

After riding all weekend, I put my 98 Banshee in the back of my truck and took it home. When I arrived, I noticed a small pool of Oil on the bed of my pickup and began to look for the leak.

There are eight, 12mm, bolts/nuts on the underside of the Banshee transmission, located just forward of the Tranmission Oil Drainplug. These eight bolts are lined up in two rows of 4. One of the bolts closest to the Drainplug was wet and appeared to be leaking.

My first question is, what are these bolts/nuts for and, if they loosen, do they leak tranny oil?

My second question is, do I have some type of internal damage [blue](the Banshee, not me)[/blue] that is causing this to leak or is this common? They do not appear to have washers on them, so are they part of the tranmission/oil case sealing?

Any info would be much appreciated!

I think your talking about the small 8mm bolts (bolts go buy thread size not head size). One might have loosend up. Retorque to spec. (12 ft. lbs. I think). I doubt there is any inernal damage, just change the oil tighten the bolts and go. Later.

Bikes are going to rattle apart. After so many hours of riding you are suppose to retourqe the head bolts side case bolts and check motor mounts. Bikes take a beating and will stop running unless u perform the proper maintenance. Hope this helps

I did tilt the ATV upright to get it into the bed of my truck, but the oil was coming from one of those bolts as I described above. And yes, you are right, the 12mm nut I was speaking about was the size of the wrench I used to tighten them.

I don't think the vent tube is the problem as I have run that up the center of the frame and attached it under the radiator plastic. I did this for two reasons, 1) I put a filter on the end to ensure junk doesn't come back through it and, 2) Clean-up its appearance by eliminating another hose that hangs below the engine.

Anyway, these bolts I described. What purpose do they serve and why would oil leak from them? If they are susceptible to leaking, shouldn't they have some type of washer on them?

Like I said, how do I fix the problem since the nuts were tight and don't have any type of washer / seal to replace?

What happens if I remove one of these nuts to put a brass washer under it to make a better seal. Will the oil drain out?

Ohton:

Thanks for the offer, but I had to work all day and just got your message.

I just checked out your web site and would like to get your telephone number. I am sure I can send you some work.

I was at the 2000 Sand Drags in Rocky Pointe and had no idea your engines won! The drags were great!

I found the leak, but am too embarrassed to tell you where it was over this Thread (I may not be smart, but I am very humble)!

[green] Anyway, please e-mail me at: rob4092@home.com with your number, address, etc. and I will drop by! Please note that the e-mail address (rob@futureone.com) my ATV Connection Profile defaults to is not correct. I have attempted to modify my profile several times, via ATV Connection Profiles, but it never takes. I have e-mailed ATV Connection numerous times, but they never make the change. Instead, they send me step-by-step instructions to modify my profile and it simply won't take my new e-mail address.[/green]

Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you and thanks again for the info!
