Default 87 quadsport needs help

Just purcahsed an 87 quadsport 230 manual clutch and kickstart for 1100 dollars. It takes 30 to 40 kicks to get a sputter but if i pull it behind a car and pop the clutch in 3rd or 4th gear it will start. So why wont it start by kicking it. I got it to start once by kicking it when i sprayed starting fluid in the carb but was told it was to high octane and would score the cylinder walls. Oh yeah once it starts it runs strong. Any help would be great.

Could your rings be worn causing you don't have a lot of compression?

I dont think it is a compression problem because if i dont pull in the compression release handle I can stand on the kickstarter and it wont budge
