Powder Coating
#1
I am fixing up an 85 atc 250r and I was wondering if you guys could give me an idea on how much it would cost to get a frame powder coated. I just want a black frame, and I was wondering if you guys could tell me what kind of prices you have paid to get stuff powder coated

I don't know where you live but it ain't that cheap here in South Florida. I just had my '86 TRX250R frame sand-blasted and powder-coated Honda Red for $200. I checked other companies and I got quotes from $150-$250. I chose the company I went with because they did exceptional work. The powder-coat is extremely thick and they took the liberty of plugging the threads for me.

Be sure that you are getting the frame sandblasted and not burning the old paint off. the heat will mess up the molecular structure of the frame. generally speaking powdercoating will cost between 100-250 depending on the type of powder beind applied and if your clearcoating it as well. Metallics and two stage powders are generally more. also if they are setting up just for you they will charge more so ask em to wait till they have a large run of the color you want. I speak from experience as a former shop foreman and powdercoater. Also ask for samples as some powders lay down smoother/ less orange peel.

powder coating done right will actually flex with the metal it's applied to .. as a demonstration of powder coating we used to back some 4inch squares with th epowder and twist it back and forth and it looked fine , i've also seen a ball peen hammer ponded on it and you can just buff out the scratches ..
