Suspension options for a 1987 Honda 250X
#1
Ok guys. I haven't really psoted much here and always lurk but here we go:
I'm picking up a 1987 Honda 250X with a 1987 Yamaha Radian 600cc motorcycle engine. I don't know what suspension is on it but I'm assuming it has stock control arms, etc. I do know the stock shocks are on it and some Honda 250R shocks are included in the deal. I was told they are longer and better than the 250X.
Anyway, I plan on pulling that motor and replacing it with a 1997 Yamaha FZR 600 engine that put out 85HP on a Dynojet dyno. My question is where do I go for wider control arms, wider rear axles that will fit the 250X and possibly a modified swing arm(longer)?
I'm assuming the suspension is completly stock. If it is this will be a terrible and unsafe ride for me considering I'm 250+lbs. and plan on using the quad for obviously drag racing, hill climbing but most importantly mostly trail riding. Thanks in advance!!!

Get 400ex a-arms. They add a few inches to the width and are way cheaper than aftermarket. Also, 400ex/250r shocks wont work, even with 400ex a-arms, unless you fab up or buy adapters for the upper shock mounts. the stock shocks of the 250x/300ex are 13 inches. 250r/400ex shocks are 16 inches. I bought 400ex shocks after installing the a-arms and was disappointed to learn that they did not fit.
look on Ebay and you can find 400ex a-arms. I used the stock shocks and it lowered the quad a little, but it was for my wife and she wanted stabilty over jumping ability, however, I rode it and jumped all day long with no problems. Something i am thinking about doing is getting some banshee works shocks. they are 14 inches and only the top bushings are different. works shocks bushing are fairly universal, so you just need to get some 250x/300ex bushings for the top. These shocks would restore the correct ride height. There is a pick of my wifes 300ex with 400ex a-arms and the stock shocks..

Thanks for the quick reply. I figured some of the later 300ex or 400ex stuff might work. Didn't know for sure but I'm glad you clarified that issue. I don't want to come off as an ****....but your wife and her sister are HOT!!! You lucky devil!!!!
Anyway, I'm going to look into those A-arms and will probably get the performance shocks for the superior handling and support for my big butt.
As far as the rear axles, aftermarket longer, stronger axles? Are the 400ex hubs worth changing to for more access of wheels? Thanks again!!!

Hey, I like to hear others think they are hot.
Anyways, changing the rear hubs wont change anything. I think the 400ex and 300ex hubs interchange, but not sure. The rest like axle, carrier and swingarm don't. Ebay often has durablue axles for the 250x/300ex.
Just hunt for all the goodies. They are there.
