Default engine ticking loudly in break in

After installing my 440 kit it fired right up no smoke or anything. After a while it would smoke a bit then stop. I let it idle for a while then started cruising around the yard 1'4 throttle. After about 5 mins it started ticking really loud. It ticked before becasue of the stage 1 cam but this is much louder. I shut it off and pushed it back to the garage. Could it be the cam tensioner? We followed the timing procedure but couldnt get the two lines on on the timing chain gear exactly parallel with the head. Should i take the gear off to get it lined up right? It ran perfect for about 5 mins and then started knocking.I cant figure it out. Any help is awesome

yes you should get the gear lined up right. also, as regards your ticking noise, it could be your valve clearences inbetween you cam and your valves. if it isnt that, than it is something more serious
