Default K&N cleaning

I just got a K&N air filter for my 500HO. I have a few questions.

1. Should I use the extra cover that comes over the factory filter?
2. DO you have to clean it with the K&N cleaning kit or are there other methods?

You don't have to use the stock prefilter......it will just muffle your performance.

When cleaning, spray the cleaner on nice and evenly and somewhat heavily.......and let sit for 10 minutes.....then wash out in warm water(take your time.....just keep letting water run through it until you see clear water come out of every part of the filter).......then let dry good(24hrs).........spray a nice even light coat of oil on it....then install, make sure it makes a good seal, if you are worried it won't, get some grease(any type is fine, but marine grease would be best).....and put a thin coat around the sealing side....

Thanks for the info BRADRACER, a couple of ?'s for you.

How often should you clean it under normal riding conditions?
Would it be helpful or harmful to put in a dishwasher?

No dishwasher........I've never heard of anyone doing that.....just do it the conventional way I explained......the dishwasher gets pretty hot, and those are too expensive to ruin......

You will be able to tell when it is getting clogged up.....power will decrease a bit, and by looks you can tell.......they look dirty.....
