Well the dirtbike motors will produce more hp than the atvs, especially in the 500's. As for the best I'm not sure I guess the cr500,as for the 250's it would depend a bit on the year too.

here is my 2 cents:the old non valved cr 500 motor was a real screamer, very easy to maintain and responde very well to mods if you match a pipe and porting combo on it,pretty reliable as hell, the lt 500 zila is the engine of choice when it come to fit a quad frame cauze of the counter balance motor, very powerful through the range that
one,but still have gig vibrations problems, heads gasket crack alot on those thing, the kx 500 engine is the most powerful of those big bore, with power valved motor and an awsome top end power it deliver a very broad powerband like valved motor do,65-67 hp stock is the number i heard the most from them, but remember
no counter balance so a lot more vibes to be fixed,.
the absolute winner in the 250 class is the cr 250,with the case reed induction in it,no other 250 have the stongest hit it produce through the range, all other 250 are reed valve or piston port inducted,BUT i'll
take the tecate 250 motor any day with his strong top power and smooth delivrery.

LOL will not having the counter balance hert the bike?? im not really following what that does! i have noticed it in all fourwheeler engines and none on the dirtbike.. that i have torn apart..
