Do I really have to take the engine out of the frame?

Please tell me "NO".
Here's the deal.
I went riding sunday and the shifter doesn't come back into place (when you push it down, the gear gets in, and it comes back up in that "middle" position). It just stayed down. I was able to pull it back up, but could feel absolutely no resistance. I guess there's a spring inside, and that spring is broken, or slipped away from where it should be...I don't know. How can I be able to look in the gearbox. Left side case just lets me see the stator, what about right side case? I can see the clutch, but can I also see the gearbox(didn't open it yet)?
It seems like the gearbox is "cut" in the middle, do I have to open it from there to repair my stuff. To open it that way, I suppose I have to take the engine away from the frame, right?
Anyone already done that?

on the foot brake side of the engine-take off the brake, foot pegs, kick starter, and everything else. drain the oil and take off the side cover. take off the clutch and everything for the shifter is right there. it's pretty easy to do.

follow the directions from the last post. You broke your shifter spring that is part of the shift rod. It is about $40 for a replacement. Look at the link below for pics of my frined repairing his on the side of a road. Look in the last potter county photo album. This is pretty simple to repair. good luck

So you guys say the shifter axle is accessible from the clutch?? That seems quite far, but I believe you. I'll do it the way you describe it. So my guesses were right, the spring broke...did it really break or could it have come out from its place? (this is to know if I should rush to the dealer to get one or no).
Thanks a lot!
