synthetic oil

This thread is an example of how these posts should go. I am picking up very valuable information here which will enable me to taylor my atv maintenance to my machine and riding style/frequency. Thanks to all who participate in this fashion.

Kevin2650, I'll have to give an AMEN to that.As a forum discussion, it has had a divergence of opinions, not a lot of over- the- back- fence edicts given as from on high as the Eleventh Commandment.

Thanks everyone for responding to my post. All of the info given will help me make a decision on what oil to use. I also agree with the manner of how everyone responed. No negative feedback was given and I am thankful of that. So often, facts are lost in the clutter of who's machine is faster or better. Thanks for just giving me the facts. I respect everyone a lot more for that.

Well Synthetic oil stinks and my bike is the fastest and can go through the most mud......Just kiddin'...... sorry cstark, couldn't resist.
Actually, I had e-mailed Gordon to ask him the same thing a few weeks ago and he brought up a very good point. If synthetics are better, wouldn't NASCAR and NHRA use them? Their motors start at $50,000. I have a Ford f-150 for 189,000 miles on it that has never used Synthetic oil, but has been taken care of very well, and it burns very little oil, 1 - 2 quarts between oil changes (which I dont consider much for that kind of miles)
I feel safer using a good quality conventional oil and changing my oil that much more. I would rather pay $1 per quart and change my oil every 100 - 200 miles than paying $4 a quart for synthetic and changing every 500-600 miles.

I think that the most important thing is to change the oil regularly. No matter what kind of oil you use, or what kind of riding you do. That will insure that you are not harming your engine.
Does anyone know where I can get a Nitrous Oxide System for my quad?(just kidding)!!!!

Several race teams use synthetic oils Penskie and John Force ust to name a few, also several auto manufactures spec. synthetic oils in the owner manuels,Chey Corvette and Porsce just to list a few!!!Now will a engine that uses synthetic oil last longer than a engine that doesn't, maybe so but thats not the only reason to run synthetics, better gas mileage, better protection from heat and extended oil change intervals= reduced maintaince. Now don't get me wrong I've have used petroleum based oils with good results also but they require more maintaince.Just my 2 cents!!
