I'd really like to switch to synthetic oil, but I'm afraid it will start leaking. Is this just a stupid rumor? I have a '90 Mojave that has many many hours on it.

What is everyone else's experience with syn? Good, bad?

I currently use Castrol 20W50.

I swear by synthetic oil. We run it in everything; cars, trucks, tracters, lawn mowers, and, yes quads. I use 20w50 mobil 1 in all cases. I can tell a nice drop in engine temperature when I use it. As to the rumor of using it in older machines, I heard that one too, but I tried it in an eleven year old quad with many miles on it and it never has leaked.

Synthetic oil is great. It has a much higher breakdown point and can withstand higher pressures. Do Not however use any kind of synthetic oil or fluid in transmissions of cars and trucks. The synthetic is great for the gears but for some reason it makes synchronizers wear out really fast. Synthetic is so slippery that you are not supposed to use it in a new motor because the rings and other things that have to break in won't since there isn't much friction. In cars you are supposed to wait about 5,000-10,000 miles before changing from conventional oil to synthetic. It actually makes motors run smoother and idle smoother since it is so much slicker than regular oil and actually boosts horsepower a few points like 2-8 horses in Mustangs I know for sure, depending on which type or brand you get. Mobil 1 is a great oil but stay away from Castrol Syntec, it is crap and there are many websites out there with info on this so you can see for yourself if you want. You just have to search for them.

I am running synthetic in an air cooled Honda 300 in Texas and it does get hot in the summer. My atv is used approximately 30-60 minutes each day. I am running the new Mobil 1 20W-50 made for motorcycles. It is supposed to be OK with the clutches. I have not had any problems.

OK, cool, I guess I'll try it in the spring. I was just curious about using it in ATVs. I use Mobil 1 in my car and I agree with everyone, it's great.

I thought Mobil 1 only made 15W50. Is the 20W50 new?

Yeah, the 20W-50 and another oil (in a small container) that is for 2 strokes is now available. I got it at AutoZone. It was with the automotive oil, but in a separate small rack. The container has a picture of a motorcycle and says for motorcycles. I believe they may have some info at WWW.Mobil1.com. I know they have information via an 800 #. I can get it if you want to call.
