Someone installed a snorkel on their airbox and exhaust within the last 2-3 months. He went from not being able to idle to running smooth. One or more adjustments were made to the air/fuel mix or idle, etc. He went through several mods and I wanted to see if he was still on the forum or if anyone else could tell me what to expect? Thanks for any help.

You do not mention what kind of machine you ride...Most people are looking to make thier quad breath better.. I don't know for sure..but my guess is that your friends quad was running with a bit too much air(making it idle ruffly)...when he put the snorkle on...he in turn..restricted the the air flow just enough to help the carb breath easier..I think he could have accomplished the same effect by adjusting the air corrector screw...
But without seeing and listening to the quad, it's hard to tell.Any time you mess with the intake...you are looking at jetting changes(usually bigger)..Unless oyur restricting air..then go smaller

Hey TxDoc2!

I just finished my snorkel project today, and it went alot better this time. I have a 450S and used 1 1/2" Spa Flex tubing (made for hot tubs) that I picked up at Lowe's. It fit into the air box with out many modifications. I sealed the entrance into the box with a lot of silicone on the inside and outside. The tubing runs along the left side of the frame above the motor/exhaust. I tied it up along the frame with wire ties and ran it through the wheel well and between the front left shock and the frame. There it connects to an adapter from the 1 1/2" tubing to 2". Then into a 90 degree turn upwards where it connects to a 2" thick piece of PVC. It runs up through the front fender and is tied to the rack for support. It comes up slightly higher than the handlebars and then curves back down to keep rain water out. I also ran a piece if 1'4" nylon tubing from the vent tube off of the carb. It runs up along the side of the other tube and I made a loop in it at the top with the opening facing down. That way in case any water did get in it I could drain it before it got down to the carb. As far as the carb goes it was close without any adjustments but I could feel the sluggishness. I dropped the clip on the needle down 2 notches and it gets the right amount of air again and runs like it did before the snorkel. I tried the snokel out today and it seemed to work fine. The water was almost as high as the stock one but did not go over that height, and I had no problems. I'm gonna try some more holes though this weekend. I'll keep you posted.

Oh yeah, I'm gonna borrow a digital camera from work tommorrow to take some pics. I'll post them for others to see.

SwampMonster-just checking on the snorkel. I was wondering what it sounds like with the air intake up there. Can you hear it pulling in the air? Let me know how it goes this weekend. Do you have your exhaust extended?
Thanks

I would like to put an air box breather on my atv, but, no one so far has really given me exact details as to what parts are needed and what parts connect where, I really need to know some details before I even ask my parents if I can do it. How much did all the parts cost? The reason you see me always saying I need to ask my parents is because I'm 14 and what they say goes, didnt want you guys to think I was just a momma's boy or something! I even asked highlifter about it, they couldnt really give me details, maybe I just dont get what they tried to tell me. Help me please!

SwampMoster SEAL your air box lid with silicone or you have a problem when you get into deep water. What happens is when the water covers the box (higher then the lid) engine vibration WILL cause the lid to "adjust" leting water in. Run a bead of silicone where the stock seal is (on the lid) and put on and clip it. OR Run the a small bead in the same spot as above but don't put the lid on. Let it dry. the put the lid on, this works too and allows you to open the box. BUT for best seal put the lid on while the silicone is wet. This is a real problem on Hondas. They clip the lid on the box, instead of screws. Kenny
