Storm5, with a service manual, I'd remove the carburetor, disassemble, clean and adjust it (get a rebuild kit if necessary; if not, replace all worn or questionable parts). Reinstall and check it out; you may want to adjust the jetting; however, an old engine pumping oil can leave a spark plug pretty black, as can a too fuel-rich carburetor.

New carburetors are seldom necessary if the body is undamaged; rebuilding is more economically sensible. Good luck.

In some situations, a richer mixture will give more power, but your carb is designed for this...when you need power, it makes the mixture a little richer.

Re-jetting would almost certinly richen the mixture to an un-efficient level unless some other modifications were made. You may have heard that more gas will make more power, but this is not entirely true. As an old racecar man has told me, the air you can get in, the more gas you can burn, and the more power you can make. ATVs and dirtbikes already run a very rich mixture. Without it, they couldn't run at all.

Moral of the story: without more air, more fuel is useless.

Sorry Polaris but you never get more power from an engine by running it too rich @ operating temp.
More air=more power, not fuel.
Also the manufacters over jet the bikes for warranty purposes, try and burn up a rich running engine...hehe
I have major mods on my Wolverine and I run the stock jet @ 4000' or above, and one size up @ sea level.

I have to agree with tree,Sounds like it's just dirty and varnished up.Like it was rode hard and put away wet,For the winter after winter after winter that is.
