CBR 1000 zilla
#1
A friend of mine is building a cbr powered quadzilla, which is actually turning into more or less a four wheeled cbr. I might get some pictures of it on here as it progresses.
We're looking at using the cbr frame and welding the front end section of a 1987 lt 500 to it. This bike will use the stock tank, seat, fairing and plastic of the 1990 CBR 1000 and after looking at the beefy, long stock swingarm, it appears he might try to adapt the LT axle and carrier to that.
The idea here for now is to use as many stock items as possible to get up and running and work on improvements from there. It's like junkyard wars with more time, less people and we want it to last longer than one run!
Obviously this will not be a tight trail bike, but with this much weight, I wonder about it's drag racing abilities. Stock hp I think was 115hp. I picture a high speed smooth dune cruiser with room for two.
Anyone with any experience with a bike close to this? anyone care to comment?

Sorry, he bought a "project" quad minus motor and swingarm. You don't want the 1987 motors anyway, the reason so many people go with 87 quadzillas for projects is that the motors went bad. If you get one, (check EBay) make sure the case halves have been sleeved at the main bearing. good luck!

Shaneb, that looks like a well done engine swap on your kz1000. The cbr motor was huge and we would have to hack the zilla frame up so much anyway that we went with just using the zilla front end. Also we would have had to relocate the gas tank.
What is your turbo from. How responsive is it? I've only ridden one turbo powered bike, it was a yamaha 650 seca turbo and it was all or nothing.
Tom18801, does the katana look like a bike or a quad, I mean does it have a quad seat, plastic, tank etc. 600 motors have excellent power to weight ratios and all the conversions I've seen but one, using 600's, have been fast. The exception was a guy who must have weighed close to 400 lbs.

Looking through the april dirt wheels is saw a custom buell quad. I think the Cbr is going to look alot like that. Rounding up parts and extended swingarm.

Where did you get your turbo from. Did you buy a kit? I've been reading up on turbos lately and think they are probably going to be the future of automobiles as mileage standards go up and as emissions standards go down. Most bikes and quads are plenty fast enough for most people and if not, there are cams and big bore kits. I would like to see a turbine type blower small enough for my bike. Something I could say get another 15-20 hp out of for running around and then swap a pulley for drag racing. Also they use their own oil supply. Do you have enough throttle response to wheelie when just putting along? I understand bigger motors spin turbos better. I think the blower would better for a smaller motor like mine, I wish someone would make a kit.
