They make a tool to split the cases.I have been lucky I guess,as mine slid right apart and needed no tool to split it (twice). It's the tranny components that can fall out.If you have doubts, have no one to help thats done it,can't understand the book (I cant),maybe you should have the shop do it,,but you can do this!! I looked and looked till I figured it all out good luck

Just make sure ALL bolts are out of the cases. You will need an impact wrench for the large 27mm nut that holds on the clutch basket and the flywheel nut. You will also need the correct flywheel puller, NOT a gear puller! Also, DON"T use a screwdriver to pry ANYTHING apart!

Get a clymer manual & read it a couple of times & then read each step as you do it. If you follow the directions you can do it, I did. Just make sure you lay out all the parts as they came out, especially the gears as there is a lot of spacers & such that need to be reassambled correctly.
The main tricky part is knowing which case half to lift off & which side all the gears stay in on disassambly pull the wrong half off & all your gears fall out & it's twice as hard to do.
Get a manual, read it & follow along step by step & it can be done.
Me & a buddy (it does help to have an extra set of hands) had it apart & together again in an evening (about 5hrs) Not including pulling it out & putting it back in the frame.
The 250R is realy one of the easier motors to work on.

Look over all the gears real good not just the bad ones. An 86 has probably had a long hard life so check everything very carefully that way you won't have to split the cases 6 months from now.
as for tips it really helps to have an extra set of hands when splitting cases. Split the cases slowly & carefully to keep the gearsets intact this makes it much easier to reassemble when you take them apart & see where every thing goes.
One more thing, after splitting the cases look in the case halves for washers that may have stuck to them.
Good luck!

I'll add:: it helps to lean the motor on the shifter side (clutch side up) and remove the cover.
going together tip: make sure that the motor is NOT leaning on the shift shaft,if so the shift shaft can come off the lil things that it pushes on,then you have to take the cover back off and put it in place,no big deal, but maybe you can avoid this
