Relax, buddy. It's really simple. Most manufacturers tell you 20:1. I mix both of my quads at 32:1. 20:1 is too rich (meaning too much oil). Depending on what kind of atv you have and what kind of oil you use you can even go all the way up to 50:1 but I wouldn't. That's too lean for most normal non-racing engines. Go 32:1...that's about 4oz. of oil for 1 gallon of gas. and shake it up good and pour the mix in the tank. Make life easier and mix 5 gallons if you can. Use a good synthetic oil like Klotz technoplate. That's what i use. Keep in mind that if you have a Tecate 4 like me or a Suzuki Quadracer, you have a powervalve and should keep it at 32:1 because that valve needs lubrication. It's always better to stay rich. Too much oil will only make the engine smoke a lot and run like crap but won't hurt the engine parts. Running too lean can cause extra engine wear and possibly seize the engine!

Just run 32:1 and you'll be fine. If it smokes A LOT(it'll always smoke a little and that's ok) reduce the oil a little.

Believe me. it's not hard. go 32:1.

I run snowmobiles witch produce for an example 128hp out of a 670cc engine. The ratio of oil is 50-1 you are getting a lot more life out of these engines with awesome oil produce today. One thing i would not do is exceed the recommended mix on the supply label, but running a 20-1 mix when it calls for a 50-1 mix you are not doing your engine any favours it runs hotter and carbons up more and carbon is a very good abrasive. I have a chainsaw witch calls for 16-1 it has thousands of hours on it. I run a mix of 100-1, the label calls for 100-1 and thats what i have mixed it no problems.

Depends on the oil.
The higher quality synthetics can be run leaner while still giving as much, or MORE protection than the older mineral/vegetable conventional oils.

I have run Golden spectro @ 42:1 and
Amsoil 2000 fully synthetic @ 50:1 with no problems whatsoever.

Plenty of oil driping off of the crank, and very little wear on the piston, and cylinder at these ratio's. This is also what the oil manufacturers recommend on the backs of the bottles.

Nothing wrong with running 32:1 either, but I (personally) think you are throwing money away, and wasting oil IF you are using a high quality synthetic.

maybe on an R it's a waste. But for quads like my Tecate 4 and the Quadracer that have powervalves that need lubrication, I'd little nervous running too lean. 40:1 is probably as lean as I would go for those quads but why chance it over a few drops an ounze of oil.

Right! As long as it is lubricating, and not gumming up, you should be ok.

Just be aware, some oils tend to gum up valves as opposed to lubricating them.

I have no experience with that motor, or oil you are talking about, so only tearing it apart after said "time interval" will tell you if it is right for your quad!

warrior, I see you are from Canada, and Canadians can buy shell ultra advanced oil, they americans can't. If you switch to this oil you will notice a big difference in power and cleanleness of your engine.
