For those who use K&N do use the outerwears? I ride wooded trails, little mud and no sand. Would I need to use a outerwears, if I keep the filter maintained properly?

Don't leave home without it!! You can get the waterproof variety if you ride a lot in the wet, just incase you happen to suck some water into the airbox.

I am confused which would flow better?

K&N with Outerwears
or
UNI foam
or
Factory foam

I am also getting ready to buy a IDS2, if that would matter.
Thanks again, This site is very helpful.

Outerwear is a must in any riding condition. The K&N will allow more air to flow through, but the uni foam will provide slightly better protection. Both sytems are good, but if you go with K&N you must have the outerwear!!!

My personal preference is either:

Sand = K&N with outerwear.
Everywhere Else = Foam (Uni or stock).

I never liked the way an outerwear gets caked up with dirt in dusty dirty conditions especially if it's over a foam filter. I don't think a K&N in any way is best for dusty conditions; foam will trap superfine dust better.

k&n with outerwear will still flow much better than foam, the real downfall to k&n is getting wet water will actually wash mud past your filter, they say a k&n will pass small particles but i ride in the very dusty desert and have never found anything past my filter

Thanks for the info
I currently use a UNI, cant tell much difference between stock. I was thinking about getting a K&N when I order an exhaust. I'm not ordering a pipe for a couple months, but I think I will most likely get a K&N.

Thanks again for the info, very helpful.

Honestly, I don't know if you will ever tell much difference between any filter. Personally, I would rather make sure my engine is protected than make an extra .2 HP. I use K&N and outerwear in the sand but wouldn't trust it in dusty conditions, but that's just my opinion.

I currently run K&N on both the 400EX and the Zilla w/outerwears, but I carry at least two extra outerwears when I ride in extremely dusty conditions and change it halfway through the ride, depending on the length of the ride...
