Riding high!!!!

Do you ride up in the mountains?
Do you have problems with backfiring and or farting from your bike?
Have you heard of changing heat ranges in sparkplugs - what does this do?
Changing the slide needles "C"clip, changes the rich/lean(which way is lean/which way is rich) mix of the carb - but how much per slot on the pin?
Any idea's or answers would be great!
Or if you know who to call to ask!
Thank you for your time!

Leave the sparkplug in the stock heat range. This should not be messed with unless you have a heavily modified motor in which case a HIGHER compression motor MAY need a COLDER plug.
The higher the number, the COLDER the plug and vise-versa.
Dropping the clip RICHENS the mixture from about 1/4 to 3/4 throttle.
Backfiring upon deceleration often times indicates a LEAN condition.
The higher the elevation, the RICHER the bike will run.
The LOWER the elevation the LEANER the bike will run.
Hope this helps.

Thanks 2fun, I don't have any engine mods, so I'll leave the heat range alone.
Well up in Logan lake I didn't really have much trouble at an idle where we were camped or close by, but we did a little rodeo stuff in a horse arena and one of the things was to pull about a 200lb farm rake around the arena and when I hooked up to that the bike would fart and miss and was running like it only had about 1/2 it's power.
Then we went up the mountain to the 5000 ft mark and when ever I opened it up or climbed a hill it was running like someone stuffed a rag into the exhaust pipe, but just running ease it was ok?
The Quest 650 only has 200kms on it as of now!
So I was told it was running rich and the guy behind me said my bike was smelling like it was burning blue - there is NO blue coming from the machine it just smelt similar!
So I've moved my "C"clip on the throttle slid up one slot in which I beleaved was one notch leaner!
Back at the coast now, I ran it around the block after moving the "c"clip and I didn't notice any real differents in power gain or loss and the bike still sounds the same so I'm hoping the next trip which is Hedley in acouple weeks which is high up in the mountains of BC (incase you don't know)everything will run a little better down at camp and up in the hills!
Thank you for your help.
If you do think of anything else drop me a line crane-op1@shaw.ca
Thanks again!
Brad

You are definately running rich. What you MUST do is change the MAIN JET a couple/few sizes smaller. I am not familiar with the Quest so I can't advise there but the guys in the Bombardier forum are very friendly and helpful and can probably offer some advice.
About the needle clip, what you did was LEAN out your MIDRANGE a LITTLE. I can guarantee it won't help much when you go back to the mountains. I would recommend that you put the clip back to stock position and decrease the size of your MAIN JET.
When you return back to sea level you will have to put the stock main jet back in. Changing jets is generally no big deal and something that everybody should know how to do; there's not magic or mystery to it.
Good luck.

Wyoduner,
Thank you for the tip - I do have the shop manuel and it's good enough that I can do these things but I like to ask first so I'm sure of what I'm doing.
I'm getting a brand new 2003 XT Quest 650 in a week or so and they're taking this one back, so wfen I'm at the dealers I'll pick up a set of jets and add them to my tool box for the mountain trip that is planned!
So you figure I'll need to go down acouple sizes ay.
I'll write it down in my riding log that I keep in the quad!
Thanks alot for the help!
