I did some research and it doesnt seem to be too terribly expensive to build a race quad using a 350X engine. Has anyone built a quad, how expensive was it and how much mechanical know-how do you need?

I've always thought of doing that but I've never had the money to do it. Too bad the 350X engines cost so much.

I see I'm a little late on this subject but here's my thoughts.
I've converted 3 wheelers to 4 wheelers and I've converted Motorcycles into 4 wheelers.
On both conversions the front control arms are tricky in trying to keep things light and clean looking, then trying to stay away from bump steer is also an issue. Then what are you going to use for spindles and hubs, I am curious as to what your tools and equipment are.
On the rear you have to consider what to use for an axle, I've used 1 !/4" cold rolled solid bar but now you have to consider what to use to connect the sprocket, disc brake and hubs to. This last part only has to do with the conversion of a motor cycle of course.
This is a very small amount of things to consider when tackling this kind of project but if you do build something it is always nice sitting back and knowing you did it yourself.

Good Luck

i built my race quad it ran me about 7000 but i already had a perfect 250r frame,so that saved me a lot. why a 350x motor? if your are just doing it for a 4 stroke how about the honda 450 or yamaha 426? or if its just because of the $$ you might build a good quad but not a great race quad. either way good luck it a lot of work but it fun.

I built a 400ex up to a 465 fullbore alochol and it costed $9000, but it was more than just that we have itt magnum 23in. tires, 8 inch paddles, dmc alien dual exhaust, electron 40 millimeter alochol carb, 465 kit, dillet aluminum headlights, tag metal handlebars, fullbore plastics, Eibach springs, high fire ignition system, and all skins for shock covers. But believe me it's worth it!

The reason I would use a 350X and not a YZF or CRF engine is I can get a good 350X engine for around $1000. I have decided not to do the project afterall, I dont have enough mechanical experience and am just gona put the money into my 400EX. Thanks for the replies.
