custom mini quad ????
#1
i am thinking about building my 8 year old son a custom mini quad to race at local tracks. he has an e-ton 90 and raced his first time this past weekend and loved it. we run nonsanctioned tracks so i dont have to worry about a lot of rules except i want to keep the engine under 100 cc. cant afford high dollar and can do most of the fabricating and welding myself. i have access to a honda cr 80 engine. i was thinking about finding a mini frame such as a honda 90 and puttng the engine on it. then as i said this cant be high dollar, i was thinking about adapting blaster a-arms and shocks on the front for the extra width and suspension travel. i also have an old suzuki quadsport i could probably rob some parts from. i havent decided on the rear axle or suspension. as you can see i am trying to us parts i can buy at atv salvage yards to cut cost. will the cr 80 motor vibrate bad in a quad frame. if so what would be a better motor to use. i would prefer to have it air cooled to save the hassle of a radiator and such. has anybody here done anything like this and do any of you have any suggestions for my project. remember this a very low cost project. thanks

Here are a couple of points of inspiration should you consider building the frame from the ground up:

Although this particular frame design would not be suitable for real racing, I think it just goes to show that you CAN build a quad, frame and all, from the ground up. With your welding and fabricating abilities, this should be a do-able project.
I have considered trying to do something such as this, just for the fun of it. I know I will try to build one for my son when he gets big enough for one.
My idea is to build a mini frame with the geometry of and proportioned like a 400EX or other modern day performance quad.
Hey, why not??
