Default Rear end Grinding on my 700 Sportsman

This does not happen most of the time, but there are times when I take off after having shift from any range to High or Reverse, my rear end grinds when I it a little throttle.
Is there an adjustment I can make or is this the start of far worse problem, like replacing my rear end.
I am planning on taking it to Colorado elk hunting and want it in top condition when I leave.
I have done a ton of work to my 2003 Sportsman 700 since I purchased it last December and it's to late to turn back now.

Are you sure the sound is from the rear gear case or maybe the transmission?? You can check the short prop shaft between the trans and rear gear case, plus the rear only holds 5 oz lube if I remember correctly(if I have correct year model in mind?). The rear ends were pretty dependable if oil was change regularly Polaris lube OR GL5 rated lubricant. About the only thing in the rear end are the bearings, the ring and pinion gears and seals,I've only seen these damaged(usually the ring and pinion teeth would wear and grind) IF allowed to get very low Or lube not changed at least yearly!. TWO other things: have you checked the drive shafts for slack in plunging joint or cv joint(can make noise) ALSO silent chain in transmission can be source of grinding if has worn and has too much slack. A lot to check,BUT hopefully will get you started. In answer to your question, there is NO adjustment that can be made,JUST a lot of parts that could cause the noise! PLUS don't know if it helps, but jack up machine and while in drive see if you can pinpoint area of noise OPT

Old Polaris Tech, you are probably correct in saying it could be the transmission. It sounds like it is right under the seat. If it is the tranny drive shaft free play, what can be done at my level? What parts need to be replaced? Or should I take it to my Polaris dealer to have the work done?
I changed all the fluids with Polaris branded oil and lube, but this problem was happening before I purchased the quad.
By the way, you are right. The rear end does take 5 ounces.

Usually the 'silent" chain in the trans gets slack and starts jumping teeth, then its NOT silent any longer! If you have a manual and a little technical savvy, you can repair Or let the dealer do it.Can be a couple gears along with the chain that also need replacing.just has to be torn into and checked out.. I think I will let the service dept. tear into it. I don't have much time to tear into myself.

would the pull up to a brick wall/tree and give it gas test work on this atv? I remember you suggesting that to me in order to check the silent chain, just don't know if that's an "across-the-board" test or just certain bikes.

Usually worked on the ones that the chain was really worn out with me. Would grind and slip against a post. Worth a try any way. OPT

I wasn't as clear about the problem as I should have been. It only happens occasionally, but it is when I am shifting into High or Reverse. It will go ahead and snap into gear when the grinding stops. I worked and planted two food plots over the weekend and it only happened twice. It seems as though it grinds worse when the shifter is not quite in the correct position.

Could be wear on the sliding gear and or the shift fork in the transmission that engages into reverse and hi gear. That's usually the partsI had to replace along with the silent chain when they had problems. You can also double check that belcrank(shift lever) on the trans and the linkage is tight. You could try a slight adjustment on linkage while shifter is in neutral to see if it helps. If still grinds then most likely the trans will have to be checked into. OPT

Default Great idea's, but more bad news.

I will have it checked out after I adjust the linkage.

FYI: My inside CV joint just went out tonight while disking this evening. I jacked it up and put in gear and only the rear right wheel turns. So I will be placing an order for one tonight. Any suggestions on who I should order from? I heard CV man was a good place to start or should I just a Polaris OEM?
