Don't know what you mean, but the second pic is part of the outer balancer case and the bolt is the old fill plug that they left on the cases even when they added the dip sticks under the carb. OPT

I think I now understand what needs to be replaced. the Entire bottom end needs to be replaced.
see pic. In the PIC, it's a whole bottom end that does NOT separate into 3 pieces.

However, Would it be safe to say I should replace the crank, Rod and piston to avoid future problems. ie, I know I have to replace the counter balancer and the gear that is to the left of it.
What do you suggest?

Look up your model at Cycle Parts Warehouse, it will show the engine cases plus the outer case and the cost!Yes to the rod, piston and the destroyed counter balancer and crank gear are have to items! You don't want to have to go back in anytime soon,so a total rebuild is a must!! When you check the prices, a good used engine or used set of cases that you could rebuild, might be a better option! Either way a complete rebuild on a 400 will set you back some$$ OPT

I usually have the best luck on ebay finding used polaris parts, sometimes it might take a while to find what you want for what you want to pay for them, but eventually I end up finding what I need for a decent price.

Yes they will work, but check the condition of your outer engine case that houses the stator assy. If still a little confused look up Cycle Parts Warehouse and the complete engine breakdown. There are a total of THREE cases! OPT

Just use a magnet! If it wont pick any of the shavings up they are all from the case. If it picks up any steel shavings, then you need to pull everything apart to find out if it's a bearing, etc that may have caused the problem. OPT.

Well I gut'd the entire enge, Did not find the culprit that caused all this damage.
However. I do have a question. I found this Polaris Indy 400, Engine
It's a 400 - 2 Cyl engine block - complete. Could I mount that in my 97 Polaris Scrambler? I can't seem to find or see the motor mounts.
Any Ideas fellas....
