Default 96 sportsman 400 starter question

im haveing a problem with my starter and was wondering if i need to drain the oil in the counter balancer before i remove the starter since its on the bottom of the motor? it will work off and on when it quits i just use the pull start a few times an the starter will work again after a few pulls of the rope im guessing i probably need to replace it

No you don;t have to drain the c/b oil! You may have a 10 mm drain bolt on the starter(some had one, some didn't) along with the drain plug on the recoil housing that you might drain and see if that helps any on starting?. You do have to pull the recoil any way though to get to the inner starter bolts. Be sure when you pull the starter out,the gear shaft(starter bendix) is functioning properly and grease it up,if in doubt or it's rusted up replace it also! OPT
