oil change
#1
I've had a polaris scrambler 500 for a few months and am finally doing service, checking anti-freese, lube etc., I was getting ready to change the oil and I found the drain plug but not a fill plug, it has a reservior under the driver side fender, but there still should be a fill plug, I know my eyesight aint great but where is it hiding???

The big screw plug with the dipstick to check the oil level is where you put the new oil in (quarts). Its a dry sump motor not a wet sump motor so the oil is stored in a separate oil tank not in the motor itself.

All I do is drain the oil tank, then start the motor and let it idle for 20 seconds to pump the remaining 1/2 cup of oil in the crankcase of the motor into the oil tank.
Re install oil tank drain plug and add 2 quarts of oil. With a oil filter change as well.

The total oil quantity is two quarts like TLC said! The engine itself ( the sump, plus whats in the upper end at any time is no more than 10-12 ounces max! With the engine cold, the sump only holds approximately 8 ounces after all oil has finished draining back into the oil tank, plus what's in the oil filter) the rest is is the oil tank.Dry sumps have a couple advantages over wet sump engines. Less oil in the engine which enables the engine to produce more power with less resistance, plus the oil temperature is a little cooler because of the air circulating around the remote tank. When you change oil make sure you let it run for 4 to 5 minutes and let set a couple minutes to get an accurate level on the dipstick when screwed all the way down. Drain the way TLC suggested, just drain the remote tank, leave the old oil filter on,after the tank drains crank for 10-20 seconds and then kill the engine. The sump oil will drain into then out of the remote tank, the rest of the old oil is in the filter. OPT
