sportsman 500 won't start

the ign switch has 4 wires im guessing 2 red are power and other 2 are kill

Black wire is the kill wire and ties into the cdi black wire along with the emergency kill circuit black. Just down load the 1996-2003 or the 2001 Sportsman 500 pdf and look at your year model wiring schematic. Can help you diagnose the problem. Index of /ORV Manuals/Polaris/Sportsman/1996 - 2001

thanks was going to get ohm meter and tone the wires and switch

Default no fire

ok took left side controll off the on off start switch
burnt resistor on back side
on off key switch shorted
replaced both apparently power from key switch shorted back to on off switch how it didnt get theother parts dont know but got fire now

Can happen! I've had to replace both the left control switch and ignition switch at the same time also. Sometimes hard to tell which one was the original problem,an ignition switch short,or a short in the left control switch which can then short out the ignition switch. Glad you posted your findings.
