Then it's entirely possible the kill circuit in the cdi itself is bad causing the problem. If you know the ignition switch is ok,and since you replaced the left switch this is probably the case. I've had this happen before,some customers ok'd a new cdi,other said that they would just "choke it down" to kill it so they could avoid the expense of a new cdi..
the ign switch has 4 wires im guessing 2 red are power and other 2 are kill

Black wire is the kill wire and ties into the cdi black wire along with the emergency kill circuit black. Just down load the 1996-2003 or the 2001 Sportsman 500 pdf and look at your year model wiring schematic. Can help you diagnose the problem. Index of /ORV Manuals/Polaris/Sportsman/1996 - 2001

Can happen! I've had to replace both the left control switch and ignition switch at the same time also. Sometimes hard to tell which one was the original problem,an ignition switch short,or a short in the left control switch which can then short out the ignition switch. Glad you posted your findings.
