Exclamation 1996 Polaris Sport- Has Spark, but wont start

My 96' sport (it's a 2 stroke) was running fine the whole week then washed it and stopped working. We have spark but it wont even start with ether. We do get back fire though on choke. Seems like we have tried everything and it just won't start. Any suggestions?

Maybe just a coincidence that you washed it and it quit running, but if you have spark and fuel, but it won't try to run with ether and just backfires,I'd check compression first. If compression is less than 115-120 psi then it could be time for a top end. If compression is above this,it's possible when you washed it (if you had the seat off) water could have gotten into the air box and into the carb on into the crank case. Try holding throttle wide open also and see if it tries to crank. Could be just the crank case is flooded with gas. Wouldn't hurt if you have an air compressor to blow all elec connections and especially around the plug and plug cap.Could be that water is causing a grounding path for the spark.
