Default engine revs wide open when it isnt, give gas and it bogs down

I have a 97 polaris 250 quadrunner. I just replaced the piston and cleaned the carb fully. When I start it now the engine revs up like it is running wide open and then when I give it gas and it bogs down and backfires. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Lot of questions, some may sound silly: is the piston on the right way, ring ends on the intake side, plus did you have it bored out or just stick a new std piston and rings back in? You sure the carb side is in properly and not binding or sticking? Plus were the crank seals replaced? This can cause it to run super lean and run wild also.

Wow. I didn't even think of that. The piston is on the other way. I bored it out to fit a rebuild piston and I haven't replaced the crank seals... I'm turning the piston right now.

You're not the first or last to do this.... Had several brought to the shop this way.
